Random Rant

Just a few random thoughts:
1. I was watching the news tonight and it appears that Wal-Mart has opened stores in China. "Good for them," one might say. After all there are a billion consumers there who have to be clamoring for cheap, knock-off, bullshit items. Also, most of the stores over there are of the Super Wal-Mart persuasion so they can sell petite Hello Kitty t-shirts in the young girls' department, and they can sell Hello Kitty, herself, in the grocery department (simultaneously quenching the Chinese hunger for both). You have to realize, though, that Wal-Mart is a self-proclaimed "Bible Belt" store. This is the same franchise that refused to sell CD's with obscene lyrics on them because they went against the high moral standards that Wal-Mart claims to uphold. Now, however, they have moved to a communist country which has, in the past, promoted the drowning of infants who were penisly challenged. Kudos Wal-Mart...way to stick to your guns.
-On a side note, does anyone else feel like China is kind of half-assing the whole Commy thing lately?
2. Whoever invented the Swiffer is a dick. I was using said item this past week in an attempt to sanitize the atrocity that was my bathroom floor. I've seen the commercials where the Swiffer moves through a nasty floor, leaving an immaculate shine in it's trail...bullshit. Not only does it fail to pick anything up (here I would admit that my floor was littered with random hair and unidentifiable scum, but I won't because I'm too embarrassed and far too much of a gentleman), but it just clumps the filth together and leaves behind a residue that smells nothing like springtime. Save yourself the heartbreak...invest in a broom.
3. What the Hell is up with people riding their 10-speeds in the middle of the road??? First of all, you're not Lance Armstrong so do yourself a favor and lay off the skin-tight riding suit and goofy looking aerodynamic helmet. Spandex is a privilege, not a right. Secondly, and most importantly, the city has invested in sidewalks for a reason...fucking use them!!! Nothing pisses me off more than driving 10 miles an hour so that some douche on a Schwinn can pretend he's climbing the Alps wearing the yellow jersey when there's a sidewalk three feet to his right.
4. Insomnia sucks...that's all, it just blows.
5. I've decided to take a hiatus from playing the open-mics. I tried doing the whole cover thing, but it's just not the same. Half the reason I play is to convey what I'm feeling in my songs and it doesn't work like that when you're singing someone else's poetry (the other half is a mix of narcissism and the desire to get laid, but neither of those are working for me lately either). As most people in "the square" only want to hear covers I'm gonna take some time off. On the plus side, though, I am still writing and should have the second demo's song list ready fairly soon. I'm trying to get 10 songs done for it, but if I feel a couple of them are just shit then the amount will decrease. In the mean time, just listen to the first disc and enjoy it. The next one has a much more "folky, singer song-writer" feel to it and is much slower.
6. Finally, we're headed to Chicago this weekend for Sully's bachelor party this weekend so I'm sure there will be many-a-story for myself, Rex, and Currin to write about next week (probably about how one of us got beat up for wearing Bengals gear to the Chicago game). Who-Dey!
Much Love,
Bo

Comments:
first off, thanks for the link to my b to the log, dude. i'll hook you up as well.

quick thought, and maybe I'm totally off on this one, but as far as the open mic/cover thing, would a suitable compromise be to choose songs that you not only really like, but that somehow convey the feelings/thoughts that you put into your originals?? I mean, I know that's no replacement for your own stuff (yay ego!), but maybe that way you could still get yourself out there playing for the masses?? and getting laid. you and I and the rest of the world knows that the chances of getting laid exponentially increase when out in public playing guitar and crooning as opposed to sitting at home.

think about it. or tell me to shut it. whatever.

very interesting...and subtle. i usually do incorporate a cover or two (such as "Anna") that means something to me and can also be recognized by the crowd of, literally, thirties that are listening...but that's really not the point. not to offend anyone out there, but a friend once told me that any idiot with two hands and one iota of rhythm can sit down and learn someone else's songs, then regurgitate them back...but where's the art in that? ironically, though, that friend now fronts a cover band. but i digress, it just feels kinda stale when you're doing a complete set (or majority set) of someone else's music and it's not the same. also, it's not so much of an ego thing as it is a psychologically therapeutic thing. my own music drowns out the voices in my head much better than Joshua Radin ever could.

I totally understand what you are saying about the artistic and therapeutic pros of singing your own stuff. I guess it comes down to what's more important to you right now, being up there and playing (even if it means selling out and doing all covers to appease the masses) or making your soul happy by playing the originals.

Um, and you've already made that decision as you said that you think you are taking a break from the open mics. so nevermind.

Bo,

It basically comes down to "What is more important"?

1. Selling out and playing Dave Matthews Band cover songs to make the ladies woo and hook up with random groupies.

2. Having "integrity" with your music and being an "artist".

I think we all know the answer to this one.

Okay, first, I didn't read the whole thing, because frankly, it was way too long and my ADHD kicked in after the third sentence.

Second, don't get me started on Walmart. They are trying to open a supercenter on Redbank Rd in the heart of Marriemont/Hyde Park/Madinsonville/Fairfax/Oakly. Also, they now sell porn in some of their Canadian stores. Thats exactly what my daily shopping consists of, milk, o.j., ass dildo...

p.s. - fuck walmart and their communist ways

God I hope that last comment was from Scooter, that would make it even funnier.

brian-

the answer is clearly #1? yes?

Oh you guys, if it were only that easy...

Yes. In life, your goal should be to sell out as quickly as possible in order to score some money and / or tail. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...now don't get me wrong. Given the opportunity, Rex I'd sell YOU out for a piece of ass or some money. John Mayer is my friggin' idol because he gets paid to do less with more. However, there is no money in open mics, and the girls I've met there, drinking on a Wednesday night, must be questioned. Distinguishing the normal ones from the raging alcoholics, though, would entail in depth conversation and, Rex you know this as well as I do, girls are scary. Therefore, my "artistic integrity" is all I have and I'll thank you not to question my motives because, as always, they're skewed.

"girls are scary"?

is this a standard belief of most guys??

if so, it explains why I go home most nights after being at the bars with my friends bitching the whole way about how not one normal, cool, funny, intriguing or mildly interesting non-tool approached me to talk THE ENTIRE NIGHT.

Now I can just chalk it up to guys being wusses. Sure makes me feel better.

come to think of it, why i care is beyond me because it's not like i'm going to find my soul mate whilst drunk and screaming surface convo in a smoky bar. but I'll still bitch anyway, that's my thing.

Amanda, the fact that you walk home with your friends and bitch about the fact that none of the guys that DID approach you were satisfactory is EXACTLY why girls are scary.

No Bo, there are PLENTY (read, ALL) nights that no one approaches. Not one single person. Zero. Zilch. well, except for the Night at the Roxbury type. Why do they have the balls to approach and the normal guys don't???
